The Business School Pre-sessional Programmes are intensive with approximately 21 sessions of supervised work per week, plus assignments to be completed outside class.

Classroom work focuses on the four skills of academic writing, reading, listening and speaking. You also attend Independent Learning sessions in which you learn the study skills you will need for academic life in the UK.

To further prepare you for study at university, you attend weekly lectures given by members of the University and other specialists on subjects of academic interest, including business, and life in Britain.

  • employing suitable research skills and reading strategies to navigate and critically evaluate relevant and reliable sources of information and ideas
  • developing a range of comprehension and note-taking strategies to make effective linguistic use of written sources

You will have weekly tutorials with your tutor to discuss your progress and will learn how to use the University libraries.

  • using your notes to aid exam revision

You will have tutorials with your listening and speaking tutor to discuss your progress.

Independent Learning

You will also have an Independent Learning Facilitator who runs workshops on areas such as:

  • recognising your learning styles
  • developing language learning strategies
  • identifying learning resources (physical and electronic)
  • learning how to use University systems, including the BlackBoard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and e-Assignments (used for submitting assignments)

You will have weekly advising sessions with your Independent Learning Facilitator to help you focus on your learning needs.

Online Programme (5-weeks): Pre-sessional 'Boarding Pass' Preparatory Course

The Pre-sessional online programme (‘Boarding Pass’) focuses on: essential academic writing and reading, critical thinking skills, grammar and vocabulary development, and study skills.  It is delivered through an online learning platform for which you will have a unique login.

An English language tutor will lead you in the online course, which includes interactive task-based learning materials that are closely linked to the weekly reading or writing assignments that you will do. You will also complete weekly vocabulary and grammar review tests.

The online course is full-time and you will need to complete 15 - 20 hours of study (both online and offline) each week to complete the programme. All your assignments will need to be completed during the online course, to enable you to progress to the second part of the Pre-sessional programme.

As this 5 week course is online, it can be completed in your home country before you come to the UK.

Please note that the Online ‘Boarding Pass’ Preparatory Course can only be completed by business students joining a Pre-sessional Course.
