MSc Genomic Medicine

Genomic technologies and information will transform practice across the clinical professions over the next decade.

This MSc is a new programme developed by Health Education England and being offered by a network of centres across England. It includes study of the genomics and informatics of rare and common diseases, cancer and infectious diseases, which can be applied to clinical practice and medical research, and enhance knowledge and skills, in this rapidly evolving field.

What does our MSc provide?

This programme, delivered by the Faculty of Medicine, will provide a comprehensive perspective in genomics applied to clinical practice and medical research, with particular emphasis on the 100,000 Genomes Project. It will equip students to bring benefit to their patients through improved diagnosis and personalised treatment, and disseminate knowledge to peers, patients and the public.

The masters course has been developed by Health Education England and includes study of the genomics and informatics of rare and common diseases, cancer and infectious diseases, which can be applied to clinical practice and medical research. Overview

This MSc Genomic Medicine has been commissioned by NHS England / Health Education England to provide education and training in genomics for health professionals from different professional backgrounds such as medicine, nursing, public health, science and technology, for whom knowledge of genomics will impact on the way they deliver their service to patients and the public.

This programme can be tailored to meet your career aspirations and enables you to choose your module options, plan your programme route, and choose from October or March to begin your studies.

You can study part-time or undertake smaller numbers of, or even individual, modules to fit your study around your other commitments.

Modules

Southampton’s MSc Genomic Medicine comprises eight core modules delivered through intensive face-to-face study and independent learning.

Our core modules include an introduction to the genetics and genomics of rare and common diseases, cancer and infectious disease, informatics analysis, and a laboratory research project or dissertation.

Optional modules within the programme include the Ethics, Counselling Skills and Teaching the Teachers to Teach.

Teaching and learning

Using a mix of learning formats, our modules include two groups of two days' intensive face-to-face teaching interspersed with independent study.

The first core module will include an additional day of student contact to incorporate an induction to the University’s facilities and introduction to basic research skills such as literature searching and critical appraisal of scientific literature).

A variety of learning and teaching methods will be adopted to promote a wide range of skills and meet differing learning styles, including seminars, group work, practical demonstrations and exercises surrounding interpretation of data and clinical scenarios.

Experts from a range of academic and health care professional backgrounds are chosen to ensure a breadth and depth of perspective, giving a good balance between theories and principles, and practical management advice.

Independent study is delivered through a virtual learning environment, delivering a library of study materials including uploaded lectures, virtual patients and independent learning tasks, reference materials, links to online tutorials, student fora, and guest lecturer web chats.

A significant component of your research will comprise either an original project or a literature-based dissertation.

If you are sponsored by Health Education England we would like to make you aware of the programme completion dates by which HEE are likely to fund you.

As current funding for the programme ends in 2018, HEE have informed us that funding can only be guaranteed for taught modules completed by the end of September 2018 and the research module if completed by the end of March 2019.

All HEE applicants must confirm with HEE if they will fund the modules/programme applied for should it take longer than the above timeframe to complete the studies.

Any modules taken outside of the above period will need to be self-funded or from alternative funding, if HEE funding is unavailable.

Application Dates

Applications must be received no later than four weeks before the start of the module/programme. In addition, you must have supplied all of the required supporting documentation two weeks prior to starting your module/programme.

This programme has been established with Health Education England (HEE) to provide education and training in genomics for staff in the NHS as part of the 100,000 Genomes project; as such, applicants who have secured funding from HEE may be allocated places in advance of non-funded applicants.

Programme Structure

The full MSc course comprises eight core modules: seven taught modules of 7.5 ECTS (15 CATS) each and one research module of either 30 or 15 ECTS (60 or 30 CATS).

A range of optional modules is available for you to design your own learning experience to complement your career needs, and to complete the full programme of 180 CATS.

In addition, it is also possible for students to take modules relevant to Health Care from a choice across the University, such as Leadership in the NHS (with the agreement of the Programme leader).

The programme structure also allows you to start the MSc programme and complete either a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma, or the full MSc.

Entry Requirements

Typical entry requirements

Selection process

Intake: 40 students per academic year. A quota of 65 full MSc courses, or equivalent modules of study, will be allocated to NHS employees during academic years 2015-2018.

For both NHS and non NHS staff the normal requirement for entry is a good first degree (lower second class), or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University, in a health, or health-related field.

If you do not have a good first degree you will be expected to provide evidence that you are able to study at Masters Level, normally: (i) a relevant professional qualification at a suitable level, (ii) several years' relevant post-qualifying professional experience, at least some of which must be at a responsible level, or (iii) completion of at least three years of an undergraduate medical degree.

As part of the application process, candidates are asked to write a personal statement to explain their motivation for wishing to take the course and to indicate their future career plans. Candidates will also be required to submit one reference, and their degree transcript and certificate.

English language requirements

Competency in English is essential as the course if taught entirely in English. Students who do not have a degree from an approved University that has been taught and assessed in English, or who are from a country that is not on the list of those exempt from testing, required a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 overall. We accept a range of Secure English Language Tests. Those for whom English is not their first language are asked to indicate what level of English they have attained.

Prospective students currently employed by the NHS may have their fees paid by Health Education England for MSc, Diploma, PGCert or individual modules of study. Therefore either before, or in parallel with, application to the University, NHS staff should apply for financial support via the Health Education England’s (HEE) website. Typical course content

Introduction to Human Genetics and Genomics (module one), and Omic Techniques and their application to Genomic Medicine (module two) are the background to all further studies and give a comprehensive scientific and clinical foundation to the normal structure of the genome, its alterations in disease, the current and emerging technologies in medical genomics and the NHS structures in which they are employed.

EquipmentIT: Hardware Across all campuses and most halls of residence approximately 1700 computer workstations are available. Students may wish to purchase their own desktop/laptop/tablet computer to support their studies. This is entirely optional.
