The University of Southampton’s libraries hold an abundance of incredible documents in its archives. The WSA library and the Hartley Library’s Special Collections both display material from their archives.

Hartley Library is home to two exhibition spaces, both of which are open and free to the public. The Special Collections Gallery presents a fascinating historically focused programme drawn from the archives while the Level 4 Gallery’s diverse programme displays contemporary visual art.

Winchester Discovery Centre

A recently refurbished public library, the Discovery Centre features an art gallery with an impressive programme, designed to display material from the most important galleries, museums and private collections in the country.

A Renowned National Collection

Located in the city’s Cultural QuarterSouthampton City Art Gallery is internationally renowned for its permanent collection that features around 5,300 works brilliantly displayed in its diverse exhibition programme.

Art in Unusual Spaces

Dotted around Southampton’s historic Old Town are smaller visual art galleries and organisations:

Consisting of just two repurposed Grade II listed phone boxes found close to West Quay, K6 Gallery showcases both local and national artists with a focus on contemporary and conceptual art.

HA HA Gallery is a contemporary art space on the historic Old Northam Road in Southampton.

One of the city’s oldest buildings, God’s House Tower, runs a visual arts programme and has held exhibitions, artist residencies, and community events. It is about to undergo a refurbishment into an arts and heritage venue, where it will host both contemporary art and historic materials relating to Southampton.
