Do you want to inspire others by passing on your unique experiences, career knowledge and expertise? The Career Mentoring Programme can give you the opportunity to support our students through their transition from study into graduate employment.

Mentoring creates fantastic opportunities for students to receive relevant and up to date career sector / employability focused advice and help, from a mentor who has been through a similar journey. We are looking to recruit mentors from all different industries and walks of life to support our students.

We also offer Career Contacts, Business, and Diversity Mentoring in addition to our main mentoring programme. Please see the 'Types of Mentoring' tab below for further details.

A really good programme and something that I wish I had had the option of when I was at University. I definitely recommend that mentors and mentees alike get involved as it doesn't take up much time but can help make a huge difference.

Career Mentoring is an excellent way for you and your mentee to both learn and develop key mentoring skills. Mentoring is a very valuable skill in the workplace and increasingly valued by employers.

As a mentor you can:

  • Develop key transferable and employability skills to support your own professional skills base
  • Increase exposure for your organisation
  • Gain access to networks and contacts within the institution
  • Unlock and discover fresh talent
  • Have the opportunity to give something back, particularly for alumni of the university

A number of organisations have successfully recruited previous mentees on our programme to internships and graduate level job opportunities that they have. It is important to emphasise however, that it is not a requirement in our programme that you have to offer such opportunities to our students.

Benefits to Organisations:

We are happy for organisations to encourage several staff to take part as mentors. Some organisations utilise our programme to help raise their profile on campus whilst benefiting from personal professional development.

It can also be a great opportunity to show students the various different roles and departments within your organisation.

If your organisation would like to encourage several members of staff to take part as mentors, we can work with you to organise training sessions at your workplace (depending on numbers).

In addition to our main Career Mentoring Programme, we also offer additional types of mentoring:

Business Mentoring

Do you have entrepreneurial skills? Could you offer support to a student who would like to set up their own business? You can sign up to be a Business Mentor to provide specialist advice to students who are interested in self-employment and enterprise.

Career Contacts

If you would also like to offer support for “one off” or ad hoc questions from students who don't require a long term mentor, then you can also register to be recorded as a Career Contact. If you only wish to be a Career Contact (and not also a trained mentor), please could you clearly state this in your application. You will not need to attend mentor training if you only wish to be a Career Contact.

Diversity Mentoring

Do you have personal experience that could support students from one or more of the following groups?

  • Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnic (BAME)
  • Care Leavers
  • Disabilities
  • First student in family to go to University
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans (LGBTQ+)
  • Women

We offer our students the opportunity to benefit from tailored mentoring. You can sign up to be a Diversity Mentor alongside the wider mentoring offer.

Our programme opens for applications from students at the start of each academic year (September – January). This is to allow the maximum time for our mentoring relationships to become established and take place over the academic year.

Both mentee and mentor training also takes place between September – January. As soon as our individual mentors and mentees have received training we can start matching you together (if you have already applied and received training you do not need to repeat this).

Once you are matched you can then start your mentoring relationship. This typically lasts one academic year, however some mentors and mentees carry their relationship over to a second year.

The mentoring relationships are flexible to suit the needs of you and your mentee. The amount of times you meet is determined between you and your mentee once you start the relationship.

We will support you through the training, matching process and the mentoring relationship. Our mentors are from a wide range of occupational areas to support students interested in diverse areas of work.

Mentoring Programme Cycle

To become a Career Mentor you will need to complete the application form and attend a training session.

1 - Online application form:

You can apply to become a mentor at anytime throughout the year, by clicking here.

Mentor matching runs from September – February, with training sessions for mentees and mentors held in September – January.

If you apply to be a mentor after January, please be aware that you may not be able to mentor a student until the next academic year.

2- Attend a training session:

We think it is important that both mentors and mentees attend training sessions. It acts as an introduction to our programme and it is a good opportunity for you to meet the Mentoring team and some of your fellow mentors.

In the session we will also provide you with the information and some of the tools that will help you during your mentoring relationship.

3 - Mentor training dates and times:
